3 out of 5 children in Sacramento aren't reading at grade level! To raise awareness about the literacy crisis in the Sacramento region, policy makers and concerned citizens in multiple districts have signed a proclamation that declared Sept 8th as "Sacramento Literacy Day" (in alignment with National Literacy Day) and September as "Sacramento Literacy Month". A press conference was held on Sunday, September 8th at Colonial Heights Library, sharing the momentum of the Literacy Movement; including a CTA (call to action) to register individuals and teams for the Walk4Literacy and Family Festival on October 26th. Your commitment to the community is valued and necessary to help all children in Sacramento County achieve grade-level reading. Please join us on October 26, 2019, as literacy focused nonprofits lead the 6th Annual Walk4Literacy and Family Festival. Collective efforts to provide literacy interventions are making a positive difference; between 2014 and 2018, 3rd grade reading improved by 11% and overall grade-level reading improved by 5%. Still, more than 139,000 children are not reading at grade-level in Sacramento County which means we need to double our efforts and keep going!

WHAT: The Walk4Literacy and Family Festival is a family-friendly event featuring a 4-mile (approximately 10,000 steps) walk through several of Sacramento’s oldest neighborhoods. The walk begins at McClatchy Park and finishes with a free Literacy Festival at Sacramento State University, where participants and the broader community can learn about and engage with agencies and organizations impacting children’s learning, while enjoying author readings, live music, fun activities, food and entertainment. Net proceeds from the Walk4Literacy will be distributed to children’s reading and writing programs. Since our inception, we have given $40,000 back to the community.
